Contents:

This module focuses on the characteristics and evolution of English learners’ dictionaries. Special attention will be given to the interaction of linguistic knowledge and lexicographical skills in the production of learner’s dictionaries and to their use. Topics to be treated in this module include:

  1. Historical overview of English learner lexicography
  2. Users and usage of learner’s dictionaries
    • dictionary users
    • situations of usage
    • learners’ proficiency levels
  3. Types of learner’s dictionary
    • general and encyclopedic
    • monolingual, bilingual
    • bilingualised learner’s dictionaries
    • specialised dictionaries as learner’s dictionaries
  4. Microstructures, macrostructures, mediostructures, functions of learner’s dictionaries
  5. Principles underlying the writing of learner’s dictionaries
    • user-friendliness (retrievability and understandability of content)
    • corpus-basedness (methods of data retrieval, authenticity, frequency, basic vocabulary)
    • combined transmission of linguistic and encyclopedic knowledge (cultural knowledge, encyclopedic learner’s dictionaries)
  6. Production of learner’s dictionaries: explanation of meaning
    • definitions
    • defining vocabulary
    • defining syntax
    • problems of lexicographical examples
    • nonverbal explanations
  7. Intermediality in learner lexicography: use of modern media technology
    • hypermedial structures
    • audiovisual material/texts/exercises
    • extensive cross referencing links

Information on the EMLex 2023 Summer school:

Practical arrangements: Various aspects of learner lexicography will be discussed in class. Participants should bring computers to access the online versions of various learner’s dictionaries. Print dictionaries, if available in the local library, are also relevant, especially when discussing the evolution of LDs. Photocopies will be distributed. Participants should consult with teachers for assignments.

Certificate: There are two alternatives to get an EMLex 2023 Summer school certificate – (a) without grade: active participation in the classroom discussions and (b) with grade: active participation in the classroom discussions and written assignment.
