Az Anglisztika Intézet felhívása TDK részvételre a 2026/27-es tanévben

Az Országos Tudományos Diákköri Tanács (OTDT) kétévente rendezi meg az Országos Tudományos Diákköri Konferenciát (OTDK), ahol a kiemelkedő tudományos munkát végző egyetemi hallgatók mutatják be kutatási eredményeiket. A legközelebbi, 38.

A választható kutatási tudományterületek a következők: angol nyelvű irodalom, történelem, kultúra, nyelvészet, nyelvpedagógia, fordítástudomány. A dolgozat célja a hallgató önálló kutatási eredményeinek megfogalmazása angol nyelven. A dolgozat eredményeinek bemutatása is angol nyelven történik. Fontos, hogy a kutatás és az abból készülő dolgozat meghaladja a képzés keretében kötelezően előírt feladatokat és tananyagot, ezáltal a hallgató saját szakmai érdeklődését, önálló kutatási tevékenységét bizonyítja.

Mi a TDK dolgozat?

  1. Nyelvészet, nyelvpedagógia, fordítástudomány: AIMRAD szerkezet
    • a. AIMRAD = Abstract + Introduction + Methods + Results + Discussion
      • a.i. absztrakt + 4 fejezet ( + esetlegesen Conclusion is lehet a végén)
    • b. ezen tudományterületeknél a szerző önálló adatgyűjtést, és ún. kísérletes vagy empirikus, vagyis tapasztalatszerzésen alapuló kutatást (pl. kérdőívezés, szövegcorpus létrehozása és feldolgozása) folytat
  2. Irodalom, kultúra, történelem: AIBC szerkezet
    • a. AIBC = Abstract + Introduction + Body + Conclusion
      • a.i. a Body több, tetszőleges címmel ellátott alfejezetre osztható
        • a.i.1 3-4 alfejezetnél többre nem érdemes osztani
      • b.i. elsődleges források:
        • b.i.1. irodalmi művek (vers, regény, novella, színdarab)
        • b.i.2. kulturális produktumok (pl. film, festmény)
        • b.i.3. történelmi dokumentumok (pl. levelezés, törvénycikkely)

Melyek a helyi TDK konferencián való részvétel lépései?

Végzős hallgatók a szakdolgozatuk témájában is készíthetnek TDK dolgozatot. Célszerű a témavezető választásakor előbb tájékozódni az egyes oktatók kutatási területeiről. Ezekről az adott oktató CV lapján szerezhetnek információt a megadott kutatási területek és a publikációk címei révén:

  1. A kutatómunka elkezdése

Jegyzetelje le saját ötleteit vázlatosan, jelölje a kapcsolatokat, összefüggéseket, csoportosítsa a gondolatokat.

A prezentációt kérdés-válasz rész követi.

  1. A kutatás lebonyolítása

Ha empirikus kutatást végez (nyelvészet, pedagógia, fordítástudomány), az a kísérlet részletes megtervezését, a folyamat gyakorlatias átgondolását igényli: a résztvevők/kísérleti „alanyok” felkeresése, a kutatási eszközök (pl. kérdőív/teszt) összeállítása, a kísérlet lebonyolítása/kérdőívek begyűjtése mind sok időt vesznek igénybe. A kísérlet eltervezésekor állandóan szem előtt kell tartani a kutatási kérdést, hogy a kísérlet eredménye valóban erre adjon választ. Ezután következik a dolgozat megírása.

  2. 2) A Methods részben bemutatjuk a kutatási alanyokat (sample/corpus), a kutatási eszközöket (kérdőív/teszt/számítógépes program), esetlegesen a legfontosabb elméleti keretünket (pl. egy kutató hipotézise, amit tesztelünk).
Végül rámutatunk saját kutatásunk korlátaira (limitations), majd javaslatot adunk további kutatásra (recommendations for further research).

TDK Call for Papers in the Academic Year 2026/27

The biannual National Student Researchers’ Conference (OTDK) is organised by the National Student Research Committee (OTDT) with a view to providing an opportunity for university students to present their academic research results. The 38th OTDK conference will be held in April 2027. To qualify for participation in the OTDK, students must present the contents of their TDK research paper at the TDK conference organised by the Institute of English Studies in front of a jury of instructors. The aim of the Institute’s TDK process is to prepare students for the OTDK and to select the research papers that can be submitted for the OTDK conference.

The Institute of English Studies will hold the TDK conference of English majors in one or two sessions, depending on the number of participants, on 3 and 10 December 2026. The prerequisite for participation in the TDK conference is the submission of the 1st draft of the research paper and the Registration form. The TDK research paper must be written and submitted in 2 versions: the 1st draft and the refined and completed 2nd draft.

Students can choose from the following fields of study: English and American literature, history, culture, linguistics, applied linguistics/language pedagogy, translation studies. English majors enrolled in any type of course (BA, OTNA, MAD(L), RCL) and at any year of their study may apply. Students may submit a research paper that is intended to be their BA or MA dissertation. However, a BA or MA dissertation that has been defended cannot be submitted. Research papers already published in a journal or anthology cannot be submitted to the OTDK because this would be considered self-plagiarism. The TDK research paper must be written in English. It must communicate clear research objectives, identify the research methods and explain the results. The presentation of the paper must also be in English. The research paper, in its scope and content, should exceed a seminar paper and demonstrate the student’s ability to find and engage with his or her own specific research interests within the field of English Studies.

What is a TDK research paper like?

It is an academic article based on the student’s own research. During the research process, the student is searching for answers to his or her own research questions (in the fields of linguistics, applied linguistics/language pedagogy, translation studies) or is building a line of argumentation to prove his or her own thesis statement (in the fields of literature, history, culture). As part of the research process, the student looks for academic sources (research articles published in academic journals or anthologies, book-length studies), which the researcher reads, makes notes of, integrates into his or her paper and cites in a consistent manner. The research paper is a piece of critical writing, which means that it must contain analysis (comparison and contrast, recognition of patterns and themes, interpretation, speculation, inference), evaluation (deciding about the reliability, quality or truth value of statements and ideas), and argumentation (making a claim and providing reasons and evidence, such as facts, examples, and quotes in support of the thesis). Students should be advised that providing information and classifying or grouping in themselves do not qualify as critical writing. The style of the research paper is concise (using as few words as possible), formal (avoids informal, personal, subjective, and emotional language), and cautious (avoids sweeping statements and exaggerations). The research paper should organised into one of the following structures:

  1. Linguistics, applied linguistics/language pedagogy, translation studies: AIMRAD structure
    • a. AIMRAD = Abstract + Introduction + Methods + Results + Discussion
      • a.i. + optional Conclusion
    • b. In these fields of study, the student creates his or her own data by means of empirical research (e.g.: by compiling questionnaires and finding participants who are willing to complete these or by compiling a corpus, that is, a collection of texts or lexical items)
  2. Literature, history, culture: AIBC structure
    • a. AIBC = Abstract + Introduction + Body + Conclusion
      • a.i. The Body is divided into chapters, each bearing a title
        • a.i.1 No more than 4 chapters are recommended
    • b. In these fields of study, the student does not need to create his or her own data. Instead, he or she uses primary sources as the object of analysis, states a thesis statement (=an opinion statement) about the primary source(s) and proves it
      • b.i. Primary sources:
        • b.i.1. Literary works (poems, novels, short stories, plays)
        • b.i.2. Cultural products (films, series, cartoons, paintings, photos)
        • b.i.3. Historical documents (legislative bills, newspaper articles, diaries, correspondence)

A research paper mustn’t combine these two kinds of structure. In other words, a research paper has either an AIMRaD or an AIBC structure, not a combination of these.

What are the steps of the TDK process?

1. Choosing a topic and a supervisor

It is advisable to have a topic in mind before contacting the prospective supervisor. However, the supervisor may help you to narrow down or refine the topic. You may enter your incipient BA or MA dissertation as your TDK paper. It is worth browsing through the instructors’ research interests and the BA and MA thesis topics they recommend before reaching out to a specific instructor. You can find this information here:

https://btk.kre.hu/index.php/2015-10-20-11-09-16/2015-10-20-11-15-36/anglisztika-intezet/angol-nyelvu-irodalmak-es-kulturak-tanszek.html

https://btk.kre.hu/index.php/2015-10-20-11-09-16/2015-10-20-11-15-36/anglisztika-intezet/angol-nyelveszeti-tanszek.html

2. Conducting the research process

When you have found your research topic and made sure it is specific enough, the next step is to generate ideas about this topic. Jot down your ideas, make connections between them, and group them. Look for relevant academic sources and make notes of important ideas. Based on a few relevant academic sources and your own well-organised ideas, write research questions (in the case of empirical research) you will answer or a thesis statement (in the case of research based on primary sources) you will prove in the paper.

3. 1st TDK Meeting = TDK/OTDK Orientation

The 1st TDK Meeting is to be held on 8 September 2026. The Institute’s TDK Manager holds an orientation session on the TDK/OTDK process and the most important features of the research paper and answer questions. It is worth starting the research process by this time.

4. Carrying out the research and preparing the 1st draft of the paper

Empirical research (in linguistics, applied linguistics/language pedagogy, translation studies) requires planning and designing the research. This involves many practical issues, such as finding research participants/respondents, compiling research instruments (questionnaires, tests), conducting the experiment (e.g. holding a class for a control group and a treatment group or distributing then collecting questionnaires, meeting participants for interviews). Tackling these tasks is very time-consuming as you will need to allow time for organising meetings and waiting for responses. Therefore, it is advisable to start an empirical research process at least a year before the OTDK conference. Also, when designing the empirical research process, you must keep in mind the research questions to ensure that you will get relevant answers to them. The next step is writing up the paper.

  1. In the Introduction, you provide a brief background to the specific topic. Then you write a short literature review, which sums up some important and relevant studies (= research papers) written on your broader and more specific topic. Present at least 3-4 studies. Most of your academic sources will be used in this chapter: use the APA manual of style for citing sources. After the literature review, you point out a gap in knowledge or identify a research niche. This gap in knowledge will be filled by your article. For example, there have been many studies written on the correlation between teaching the grammatical features of linking words and the coherence in the essays of university students in many European countries, but not in Hungary. The Introduction ends with the research questions. It is advisable to keep them to a minimum: one or two questions are sufficient.

  2. In the Methods, you present the participants/respondents (research sample in the case of questionnaires or control and research group members) or the corpus (including the criteria of selection), the research instruments (e.g. the specific questionnaires or tests that participants completed, the computer software used in the data analysis), or the interpretive framework if you use one (a theory by a researcher).

  3. The Results chapter presents the data obtained. Whether you gather your data by means of a questionnaire, a test or a corpus, you will rely on statistics to sum up the data (e.g. 32% or the respondents thought that the application is user-friendly. / The word “superstition” occurred in 48% of the articles.) The data should be represented in visual form as well. Use charts (e.g. pie chart, line chart, bar chart) and tables that show the data and describe these in the main text.

  4. The Discussion is the longest chapter in the article, and it consists of the detailed analysis and evaluation of the data presented in the Results. In this chapter, you interpret the data, identify logical relationships between sets of data, speculate about potential explanations for the data and the relationships, and compare the data of your research with that of earlier studies. At the end of the Discussion or in a separate Conclusion chapter, you summarise the most important results and draw conclusions. Finally, you point out the limitations of your study (e.g. short time frame, small number of participants) and give recommendations for future research.

Research based on sources (in literature, history, culture) does not require the gathering of data by means of surveys or experiments since the data is already there in the primary source(s) that the researcher aims to analyse. However, the process of finding and reading sources, making notes of their relevant content, and generating ideas are also time-consuming processes and must be started well before the actual writing up of the paper. It is advisable to (re)read the primary source(s) first, then generate a debatable thesis statement (= an opinion statement about the primary source(s) that can be supported) so that you can choose secondary sources (= academic sources) that are relevant to the specific thesis statement you want to prove. In research based on sources, it is especially important to make a detailed outline (= bullet points of important ideas, arranged hierarchically) before you start drafting (= writing up) the paper. In the outline, indicate which ideas are your own and which ones are taken from a source. It is a good idea to write the author and page number next to ideas taken from sources so that you can cite them easily when drafting the paper. Use MLA or Chicago Notes-Bibliography manuals of style for citing sources. These manuals of style require you to give exact page numbers not only for direct quotes but also for paraphrases and summaries. Drafting the paper is a time-consuming task even if you have made a detailed outline.

  1. Start the Introduction with a short background to the topic, then provide a brief literature review in which you sum up the most important and relevant studies (research papers in journals, chapters in anthologies or book-length studies) written on your wider and more specific topic. After the literature review, zoom in on the research niche or gap in knowledge, that is, the very specific area that hasn’t been explored yet or not from this perspective (e.g. you use a different interpretive framework to analyse the literary work). This gap will be filled by your research paper. The Introduction ends with your thesis statement, which should also indicate your Methods. Your Methods is the interpretive framework you have chosen to interpret the primary source(s). The interpretive framework is usually a theory or theoretical approach (e.g. Marxist/feminist/postcolonial/psychoanalytical criticism) you apply to the literary work or cultural production. Your research objective is to prove your thesis statement, which should state a specific and debatable opinion about the primary source(s). You should avoid embedded questions in the thesis, especially the word “how” (e.g. This paper examines/discusses/explores how…) because, in this case, your thesis would be a question essentially, not a statement, and a question cannot be proven or supported. Answer the embedded question “how” in the thesis statement.

  2. The Body should be divided into 2-4 chapters, each with its own title. It consists of the analysis of the primary sources(s), the evaluation of academic sources relating to the primary sources (e.g. whether you agree or not with what other critics said about the literary work) and the argumentation attempting to prove the thesis statement. Each chapter in the Body should discuss a different aspect of the topic, but each chapter should contribute to proving the thesis. Support your claims with quotes from the primary sources and quotes, paraphrases or summaries from the secondary sources.

  3. In the Conclusion, you sum up the main ideas and line of argument presented in the Body, restate the thesis statement proven by the Body, and draw a conclusion. This may be a final comment on the primary source(s) you analysed.

5. Submission of the 1st draft of the TDK paper + Registration form

The length of the 1st draft should be minimum 20.000 characters with spaces (= about 8 pages). This includes in-text citation and the reference list. The paper should be in a Word document format.

Fill in the Registration form with the field of study, the topic and the title of your TDK paper and have your supervisor sign it. Please complete the Registration form digitally (not in handwriting) and send it in pdf format, together with the 1st draft to Ez az e-mail-cím a szpemrobotok elleni védelem alatt áll. You can download the form here: Registration form

The deadline for submitting the 1st draft and the Registration form is 6 October 2026.

Only students who submit the 1st draft and the Registration form by this deadline can participate in the Institute’s TDK conference.

Students will receive written feedback on their 1st draft.

6. 2nd TDK Meeting: Practice session (Training week activity)

Students present the 1st draft of their TDK paper. Presentations should be 10 minutes long and accompanied by slides. There will be a brief question-and-answer session after the presentations.

The Practice session will be held on 20 October 2026 in the Training week. Students can choose this as their Training week activity and sign up for it on Neptun.

7. Students complete, expand, and revise their 1st draft based on feedback

The research process continues. The minimum 20.000 characters-long paper is expanded into minimum 40.000 characters with spaces (=about 16 pages). This will be the 2nd draft. When expanding your paper, consider the written feedback of your reviewer as well as the oral feedback (comments/suggestions) you received in the Practice session. Make sure you reread the 2nd draft and check for grammar, style, and citation mistakes before submission.

8. Submission of the 2nd draft of the TDK paper + Declaration of originality

The length of the 2nd draft is minimum 40.000 characters with spaces, including in-text citation and the reference list. It should be in a Word document format.

Please fill in the Declaration digitally, sign it, and send it in a pdf format. The document can be downloaded here: Declaration of originality

Please send the 2nd draft and the Declaration to Ez az e-mail-cím a szpemrobotok elleni védelem alatt áll. Megtekintéséhez engedélyeznie kell a JavaScript használatát..

The deadline for submitting the 2nd draft and the Declaration is 19 November 2026.

Students receive written feedback and scores on the 2nd draft: a maximum of 30 points can be obtained.

9. TDK conference (=3rd TDK Meeting)

Students present the 2nd draft of their TDK paper.

The Institute of English Studies will hold its TDK conference on 3 and 10 December 2026 (depending on the number of TDK participant).

Students hold 20-minute-long presentations, accompanied with slides. There will be a brief question-and-answer session after the presentations. A jury consisting of the Institute’s instructors will award points for each presentation: a maximum of 20 points can be obtained. Based on the total score (max. 50 points: 30 points for the paper, 20 points for the presentation) obtained by each student, the jury will decide which students can enter the national competition (OTDK). A student must obtain at least 30 points to qualify.

10. Final revision of the TDK paper before submission

Students revise and proofread their paper, checking for grammar, word choice, style, citation mistakes, body paragraph structure, and coherence. No significant changes or expansion of the paper should take place at this point, only obvious errors should be corrected, missing citations supplied, and formatting made consistent.

11. Uploading the TDK paper and finalising the registration to the OTDK on the OTDT website

The registration period for the Humanities Section (“Humán Tudományi Szekció”) is 16 November 2026 – 13 January 2027, Wednesday, 16.00. Students who have qualified for the OTDK receive an email from the OTDT with the necessary username and password to enter the site. They must upload their finalised paper and an abstract of the paper (“rezümé”). Also, they must fill in the registration form on the website and finalise the registration by 16.00 on 13 January 2027, when registration closes and no more changes can be made on the OTDT interface.
